Garmin nüvi 3790LMT 4.3-Inch Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator with Lifetime Map & Traffic Updates
As a GPS unit, the 3790LMT is phenomenal, and I will start a bit, but first, I decided to write this review for those who, like me, live in a part of the world where the climate is extreme enough to you need to have GPS in and out of the car regularly to prevent damage (or crime).
I used to have a Garmin 765T, which was a small unit of all the reasons why I personally buy a GPS. I do not care much about MP3 playback or viewing photos, or even Bluetooth, GPS just want a fast, accurate and easy to use. And I came to discover that you also need one that is easy to take with me when I leave my vehicle.
So when my 765T maps were out of date when faced with a decision whether to update the map, or get a different drive and I decided that for the same price to "upgrade" to a new GPS that comes with the map of life and traffic updates instead of paying to upgrade a couple of months my old Garmin 765T.
After shopping around I decided on a TomTom XXL500TM. As a GPS, it was a good unit, but immediately lost the "quick release" feature of my old 765T, which allowed me to just put your time in the parking baseload very hot or very cold or when the areas that have a GPS in sight can lead the spirit beyond the criminals who were strong enough to resist. After a couple of episodes 20 second night groping in the dark to connect the charging cable and connect the TomTom in her crib, I had enough and sent me back. It was simply impractical for where I live. If you live where you can leave your GPS in the car most of the time without raising the legs, melting or freezing below zero of a brick, then save a few bucks, but if not, continue to read more. ..
Then I began to search the web for GPS units that had life and traffic maps and any collection of quick-release mounting. That was literally all I liked in terms of features, which unfortunately came to discover that he was going to cost a small fortune to get a GPS that match these search criteria simple.
Finally, after comparing is mounted between the TomTom and Garmin was broken and tried 1390LMT Garmin.
Same story, while the Garmin 1390LMT were similar in quality to XXL500TM TomTom, in terms of response time and features. And while I find your car charger and mount to be a little easier to call a dark car (maybe 15 seconds of play with the cord and mounting instead of 20), remained a no-go.
This only left me with a couple of other GPS models offered anywhere, by any manufacturer who assembles quick release (at the time of writing) and I was hesitant to spring for $ 499.00 (plus Instead, at the time of writing) to a Garmin 3790LMT just what I saw as "a series of extra features" that will probably never use it, and return to a discard pile a little fast.
But then, luck struck and I was able to pick up a 3790LMT here on Amazon for just over 20% off and sold my old 1390LMT simultaneously to more than double what he had to pay for him to improve washing. And what is an update that turned out to be!
This GPS is what is supposed to do and does it well. It's quick. It's sleak. He has the battery life. And, most importantly for me, has released a lot of very fast (do not release the same old as the 765T, but still can be done in one or two seconds with one tough, cold and glove. And I not too bad at all).
Added value:
He quickly came to appreciate the 3790 "command voice." I never thought I would use it, and really did not care a bit about this when I bought it, but now I looked at all my frequent destinations using Google Earth and entered into latitude / longitude on how to "Favorites" I quickly using the command routing voice of my next destination, and adding the points of passage for gas or coffee while driving down the road, hands and eyes to participate fully on driving. On trips with frequent stops, the time savings really add up.
Voice Command Tip: The voice command feature works almost perfectly with good diction, but even when eating a sandwich (also known as talking with food in my mouth ... shhhhshh not tell mom) , which still proved to be almost a false "screening" test using destination numbers stored in my "favorites."
Be improved? Yes.
1. Garmin could return to the old assembly release button used to have on the day of the 765T.
2. Voice commands may have more options like zoom in and out maps to help and see the union lanes.
Conclusions:
I recommend this unit as one of the best GPS units around the time of this writing. All opinions and brand preferences aside, is the only one to offer any other manufacturer at the time of writing that can be transferred from your car to your pocket and back when needed.
TomTom VIA 1435TM 4.3-Inch Portable Bluetooth GPS Navigator with Lifetime Traffic & Maps
VIA 1435T GPS TomTom is very helpful and I love the interface. It is very compact and the holder of the cup is connected to the unit, which could be more or less depending on how you feel about the place and move / remove the GPS every time you park your car or if you plan to walk or use cycling.
Let me give you a good ======= =======
* CUSTOM DISPLAY (GUI) - The graphical interface is very good and very sensitive. It also allows users to customize the settings for how to choose which type of icon to display the location and type of voice that wants to talk to you. You can also switch between the brightness of day and night. And if you go online, there are additional features that you can purchase for download to the device with the voices of characters like "Lucas", "Darth Vader" and "Burt Reynolds", among others.
* THE VOICE OF AUDIO - The location of the TomTom's voice is loud and clear, which helps, because I realized that the connection is maintained on the windshield more than me.
FOCUS DISPLAY * - You can change the left or right handed use.
* Blue Tooth - Connected to my Droid (1) and the information can easily download in touch.
* Alerts - Audible alerts can be configured to notify you when you exceed the speed limit and red light cameras. I'm not sure if you have to pay for the current red light cameras are added after setting the TOMTOM 1435T, but when I was driving an alert went out, which scared me and my friend, LOL. And you can set how long before it reaches the camera before the alarm is activated (ie, 15 seconds, etc.).
* Two cables - This is even more of a minus sign, you need a cable to connect to your computer and you have another power and traffic updates in the car. The cigarette has a cable car built in antenna that collects information on your route lasted.
* SAFETY MANUAL - This is really awesome! The TomTom includes first aid and car repair guides and maintenance to be used in emergencies and the icon for "help" will give you options to a unit called immediately, or go to the nearest repair shop, hospital, fire and police stations, pharmacies and dentists. And if you select "walk" can choose "public transport", which guides you to the nearest metro station.
* SUPPORT - had to email support about the confusion about the "My TomTom" and "TomTom Home" and responded to 24 hours. See below.
======= ======== Now, the bad
* MUST HAVE INTERNET - The TomTom should be able to connect to the Internet to catch up and for maps and other things. I think the antenna on the power cord from automobile traffic and other updates not only because the manual states that are connected to the computer and install the "My TomTom" for map updates. Then you should have a computer with a USB port and an Internet connection to download the latest updates and all other resources, like the voices of the characters that you might want.
* Hands-free calling - Although you can say "Call," which go to the menu call, the device does not recognize the names in your contacts list and scroll through the list and then say the number that corresponds to to make a call. This is useful while driving, unless a passenger makes it so you can not really use this feature unless you are parked.
CALL FOR * Audio - Audio recording of a call is very poor. This may be my fault Droid, but the use of this device to make a call and I could barely hear the other side! And I had so much volume per unit volume and my droid BT appeared to the fullest.
* Menus - You must give up the menus before hitting the "Done" button to return to the map screen. This is a pain because every time you change a setting, you have to go back through the menus.
* MI vs TOMTOM TomTom HOME - TomTom's my program that helps your TomTom device to communicate with the computer. Once you get online tells you to download the "TomTom Home", which is supposed to help manage and install TomTom maps, services, prepare trips and his team. Unfortunately, "TomTom Home" is not compatible with the 1435T and it is not necessary. I discovered this by e-mail technical support when he said "device not found" even if the unit was connected to the computer.
* Head Unit - No lights on the charger so you do not know if it is loaded from the computer or a cigarette lighter of your car. This is not a big deal unless you plan to use the device for walking, for example on holiday, and have to charge the unit in a hotel room.
Anyway, well not really a true hands-free device - should not be anyway - I think TomTom through 1435T is very good. I like that you can customize, giving a personal touch, and the fact that much more added to the drive you just maps and directions (eg, first aid and repair manuals). TomTom VIA, you are never alone on the road (or at least it feels that way).
TomTom XXL 550TM 5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator (Lifetime Traffic & Maps Edition)
The TomTom 550T 5-inch Portable GPS Navigator is a good basis for GPS navigation unit that may be recommended for those looking for a basic GPS with a bigger screen.
That said, I had some problems with this unit and TomTom that keeps me from giving five stars.
- Senator 550T TomTom XL Manual 5-inch Portable GPS Navigator sent in late spring 2010. When the unit arrived in late July had not yet online manual available for this model. There are many optional settings and even more if you have the traffic feature. The "User Guide" that comes with the unit does nothing to tell you how to turn and plan a simple route. TomTom''finally put a hand sometime in August, but appears to be only a link to the manual 350-XL (see below - it just says on the cover instead of XL XXL, as the cover for XL 340 which is a guide that describes a completely different user interface completely different).
- The installation of the software. The TomTom Home software is supposed to be installed automatically when you connect the device to your computer. This may or may not happen in Windows, but definitely not for Mac OSX. The software installer is unity (which appears as an external hard drive confusingly called "internal" on the desktop). I ran the installer has successfully installed a way to release the validity of TomTom HOME. When I installed the software used to take me to the TomTom website, which led me to the website of the UK rather than the U.S. site. This led to some confusion since the British version of GPS uses a different interface. I downloaded the manual was useless. Eventually, the software is updated and I found my way to the U.S. site. I would recommend that any user, Mac or Windows, download the latest version of TomTom HOME and install it before connecting the device to your computer.
- TomTom Support. Hit or miss. The first time I called was a simple question that I could have responded quickly to me if I had the manual. The support person, rather I do a factory reset of the unit, eliminating all that was installed at that point. After going through all this, I said the simple answer. Here's my version: street names can be read aloud only the voices of computing. Only two English language options. All other voices, paid or free, are a waste of time, storage space, or money. "
The second time I called (same day), was to ask about the missing manual. The support person was as perplexed as I was and had time to do some research and get a useful answer: the TomTom XL 550 and XL 350 shares of the same "two-button" interface (when you turn on you a screen with two big buttons in the center and five smaller at the bottom), the XL 350 manual told me everything I needed to know about the XL 550. I also sent an email with a link to the document.
- Precision annoying. Sometimes I went to my destination and parked in front of the store, while the 550 XL was still trying to convince me to go out and do some fifty feet or so after the parking garage entrance and left me caught in the middle block with my destiny hidden behind a parking structure. I suspect it is a slave to the numbers on the street. Shopping centers and malls are not just created in this way. If I'm in a lot of strip mall parking lot, tell me I have to get you started to get my business destination rather than guide me past five or six doors in the name of the nearest house number.
- The lack of common sense. On one trip, instead of having to use a single left turn pocket (shown on the map GPS) to become a parking lot, he wanted me to drive over a mile of my way around a industrial park so I could go another direction and turn right. He made a similar suggestion on another trip. In a third trip, the long road trip around the best option (although in this case he was trying to return to the streets to drive a few meters, even when I was in the parking lot next to the destination). This is another reason to use Google Maps and Street View before leaving home for a destination in another city with which you have no previous experience.
- Left Turn Ahead Phantom. On a road frequently used, there is a transition from a four-lane highway to a two-lane road. You do not really need to do anything to adjust the speed. However, when I travel from four lanes to two lanes of the party, begins to warn of a "left turn ahead." She never tells me to turn left, I simply say two or three times and then forget everything once you make the transition.
There are a couple of AA from other considerations that are more under the personal preferences or situations:
- Measurement. The TomTom 550T 5-inch portable GPS navigator is always a far shorter distances in yards instead of fractions of a mile. I'm used to miles and that's how most of the traffic signals are marked in California.
- Assembly. In my car, there's no way you can legally ride on the 550 XXL 5 inches by 5 inches smaller left windshield space allowed by California law. I tried the Arkon windshield that has an articulated arm. The Arkon suction cup fits into the legal field, but the 550 XL is too big to fit between the frame of the windshield and dashboard. There is no place on my dashboard, or big enough or flat enough to keep the TomTom mount, have the same problem with headlines such as bean bag.
- Traffic. My 550 came with lifetime traffic XXL. Unfortunately for me, the total coverage area of traffic begins about 20 miles from my house. If you are thinking of adding traffic for life, I suggest you go to the website and check TomTom (1) FM traffic signals available in your area, and (2) using the highways are usually included in the area where traffic flow is measured.
- Travel persistent. Travel is not automatically canceled after arriving at their destination. This is only a nuisance, I'm there, delete it now.
There are, however, a lot to like about the TomTom XL 550T 5-inch Portable GPS Navigator:
- Large, bright
- Easy Travel program. My basis for comparison is a seven-year-old factory-installed system cost (in time) more than ten times the price of the 550 XL. I think about the goal of achieving easier and simpler than the factory system.
- The street names aloud. This is probably the greatest innovation in my factory system. Although the factory system has a much larger screen, the names of nearby streets is often washed by the sun or too small to read with my glasses to drive.
- TomTom Home. The software works very well in Mac OSX. One of the features, I use my device is not available, but the rest seems to work and is quick and easy updates to add features, voices, icons, etc.
- "Security" warnings from the camera. I live near a city where a lot of cameras and red light runner I know most of them. XXL Warnings about 550 are fairly accurate. An out of Towner might avoid an unpleasant surprise in the mail, paying attention to the beeps and drive safely.
- Map corrections. One of the trips planned during testing of the XL 550 was a restaurant in the city news. The 550 XL has not recognized the name of the restaurant as a place of interest or address as a valid street number. He got me the next time I was there was able to send corrections to both the restaurant and the new building is located in (the land had been vague, the street number was not known until the building was completed).
In general, the pros outweigh the cons for a while, so even with the issues and considerations described above, still do what you have to do and is reasonably priced in a competitive market.
UPDATE: Since writing this review, both internal software and XL 550 TomTom Home software have been updated. There were minor changes in layout and design of the buttons and operate my function devices TomTom Home is working on Mac OSX.
Garmin nüvi 2460LMT 5-Inch Widescreen Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator with Lifetime Map & Traffic Updates
I loved my old Garmin StreetPilot 2720. It is old and although I wanted to upgrade to traffic and a battery. After two years, and later GPS units like Garmin, TomTom and Megellan brands, all the units I tried had me crazy with all that some of the features I wanted, but not all.
The Nuvi 2460LMT has almost all the characteristics of the old Streetpilot most coolest things such as voice activation. Now do not even have to touch it to work! Accept that you will spend $ 300.00, but will be happy, I guess. I spent $ 250 and was very disappointed with all GPS units at that time the price of three different manufacturers. I think the extra money gives you a great improvement, you have much more $ 300 you get $ 250.
Note, if you look at the online manual for Garmin, covering the series, 24xx 23xx 22xx e. At first I ordered the 2360LMT and was very disappointed and returned it immediately. The features that I wanted and needed 22xx and 23xx are not series have the manual does not specifically say they are not in each series. Netherlands is the place to provide sufficient details of Garmin.
What I like:
Voice operation works great.
High, clear voice, Garmin highlights here.
Beautiful screen, zoom automatically to speed faster you go, later shown.
The touch screen is excellent.
Very quick in everything he does.
Customizable main menu screen.
Avoid advanced features - allows you to avoid a specific road or place on a route.
A lot of useful features.
Maps of life and traffic.
Cons
Many of the menus can be seen in search of a function to change, but once established will be fine.
The traffic is free, but use the paid ads for the service. The ads are a little larger than I would have seen but are made so they are not too intrusive. They are there when you are moving or using the menus, and well, I'm not paying for the service of traffic, so I'm happy!
My recommendation is this - if you are addicted to GPS, sales representative, professional driver, or speak with your GPS, spend the extra 2460LMT is a major upgrade in units of a few dollars less.
I just ordered a second unit. My wife insisted on updating after playing with my 2460LMT when we go to dinner tonight.
TomTom XXL 540TM World Traveler 5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator with Lifetime Traffic & Maps and World Maps
The GPS market has come a long way in recent years. A decade ago, there were very few units in the secondary market for GPS, most were expensive and were mostly mediocre. The best units cost more than a thousand, and although here and there, they have a lot of bells and whistles. GPS units installed - then mostly limited to high-end cars - usually costs $ 2 3k.
A growing number of portable GPS units have come to market over the past 5 years or more. Over time, the hardware has improved, the software (the best) was very good, and prices (especially in the last year) was greatly reduced. (This last point - the sharp drop in the price - has forced many manufacturers market is now dominated by names like TomTom, Garmin and Magellan.). At present there is competition from high-end smart phones, most of which have a GPS unit built in.
(Surprisingly - or maybe not - the cost of the car factory installed GPS systems that stubbornly remained at around $ 2,000!)
Although it has been the hallmark of major friction in the GPS market has no shortage of options. This is because each manufacturer now offers an almost ridiculous number of models, many of which are only slightly different.
GPS units can be distinguished, mainly the following
1) Screen size (usually 5.3 "diagonal)
2) Ability to acquire a GPS signal
3) The GUI (GUI) presented to the user
4) The quality of the maps (how often updated, the geographic regions they cover)
5) The tendency to incorporate the traffic data?
6) Quality Routing (how good are the driving instructions generated)
7) Does the unit offers text to speech? (It is said that the names of streets, or simply say "next to the left"?)
8) The unit offers voice recognition
9) The unit incorporates Bluetooth to communicate with the phone and / or FM radio station to play on your car?
10) The unit has expandable memory, MP3 playing, etc.?
11) How good is the included mounting hardware?
Let's take one at a time the resources of this particular GPS, TomTom XXL540TM
1) The size of the display device 5. "This is on top of current offerings of the leading manufacturers of GPS. This does not really buy any other" real estate ", ie, the resolution is greater than the small units of GPS.'s Just a little larger. is useful to be honest, and is also useful because it makes it easy to maneuver touchscreen menus.
2) This unit, like all current TomTom lines, does a great job of acquiring the GPS signal. It can take less than a minute with clear sight lines, and my unit was still able to pull up to 5 satellites inside my house with the curtains closed. They also have GPS units from Sony and Garmin, and a built in unit in my car. TomTom is better than Sony to get a signal as good as the Garmin, and slower than the built in in the car (not a fair comparison, since the receiving antenna built into a much bigger).
3) The TomTom has a very good graphic interface. The touchscreen is very sensitive and almost everything that appears in an intuitively expect it to be. My biggest complaint is that there are plenty of options and option screens, you can punch - too hard to handle while driving. The positive side is that there is a "simple menu" options that will only display the screens of the most important option. Note that some of the latest models of TomTom (eg, 550) have eliminated a lot of options / option screen, leaving only the "simple" menus. What is a downside, as some of these deep menus are very useful. Conclusion: Good GUI and adhere to such a model, which at least gives you a choice of menus deep.
4) The map data is good, and this unit comes with a special life map updates. TomTom also has a "part of the map" facility that allows users to upload / download changes to the map. This means that if a group of users to discover that a street is closed, you can see this information on your GPS and have the information transmitted to TomTom, which shares with everyone else. Therefore, the maps are corrected very quickly. This unit includes maps of North America (USA / Mexico / Canada) and much of Europe. The inclusion of maps of Europe is considered a great advantage for some and irrelevant to those who do not want to take this outside this continent.
5) This unit includes the data traffic of life. The value of these data depends on where you live. Large cities have a wide coverage. Smaller cities are often low coverage. Traffic data is also sometimes incorrect. But overall, the data traffic is good, and quite reliable (where you can get). It is transmitted through the FM frequency, and an integrated antenna cable auto power adapter that comes with this unit. The real value of traffic data is that the unit incorporates the data to calculate the routing information. I was skeptical at first, but was surprised how well the player chooses the "right" way (not just the shortest route is in statute miles, the shortest or based on speed limits). This is an A + + function.
6) The quality of the road with this unit is excellent. Everything aside, that is, in my opinion, where the device really shines. They use what they call the "IQ" for routing. This is just put a mark on the following process: The incorporation of frequently updated information of the actual speed of several highways (and current traffic information) to generate the routing information. It works great. I tried several routes I drive frequently, where the best path for the real world can not be predicted on the basis of miles from land or on the basis of the speed of traffic. No other GPS I have used predicted the best routes in the real world - which includes a unit of Magellan last generation, a generation unit of Sony (updated with latest firmware), and the unit installed in the car (also updated). In one case, the TomTom comes with a very good route, but this is not one of the best. I went to the menu and said he wanted to avoid a certain way. TomTom recalculates and then came up the path (pretty obvious) is correct. Based on your reference, I am a believer in TomTom.
It is worth adding that this unit also includes "Route Guide" which is information about what a multi-lane lane of the road / path that must be prepared to change next street. This feature is included in the high-end units in virtually all lines of the manufacturer, and others, works very well here. I think this is a very useful feature and would gladly pay to get into a line of products to achieve this.
7) This TomTom unit has text to speech. I think this is a nice feature, although obviously you can see on the LCD for the same information in a unit that uses this function. TomTom is very good at pronouncing names can be expected to have a problem (for example, a name derived from the Spanish, or derivatives of Native American names).
8) This unit does not include voice recognition. Although I consider the recognition of voice quality to be a great advantage, my experience is that speech recognition in most portable GPS units is poor / no value. Some high-end Garmin units, voice recognition reasonable but are expensive and their use is still somewhat a work in progress.
9) This unit offers connectivity blue tooth for your cell phone or radio system by FM. To be honest, while these features sound good on paper, the only system I have used blue tooth to have been worth considering are those factory installed in a car (at a cost of $ 2,000 or more ... less ...) when the blue tooth is available in portable units, is particularly bad and ugly often. Therefore, the lack of bluetooth GPS is a waste.
10) This unit has an external memory slot, and memory can not be extended. Total load with two of North America and Europe maps, this device uses about 3.7GB of 4 GB is built in. But you can easily remove the maps of North America or Europe, under normal use, if need more space in the future. The lack of external memory also means that you not use this device to play music or videos or anything. Again, this is not a waste in my opinion. Few people use these features, even when they are included.
TomTom VIA 1405TM 4.3-Inch Portable GPS Navigator with Lifetime Traffic & Maps
I bought this to replace my 2 year old TomTom XL 340, mainly because I wanted the life map updates that were not available when I bought my XL. I called two drives in my car and about an hour to compare them. A couple of obvious differences are that through units are a bit thinner and lighter than the XL series, and the routes has a screen a little better, but honestly I could barely tell the difference. Diagonal lines are a little less irregular way if you look closely, but the higher resolution does not make much difference. The font size is a bit different too. The source of the street now is a bit more about the VIA, but the source of the next street to turn onto a little smaller, you can see in the image on the screen in this site. The street name is green and white and the intention of looking like a traffic signal. The sources were perfectly fine in my XL, and are well on the VIA as well. One thing that has changed, and I think this is new to the line of VIA is that when you are approaching your destination will tell if it is right or left. Drums previous generation could see that side of the street your destination was looking at the screen, but not advertised loudly. This is a slight improvement but not a big problem in my opinion.
As for navigation, the two units are very similar to giving directions. I noticed that in some parts of the screen guide rail kick in XL but not the VIA. I think we've changed the software a bit after realizing that there were moments came when guide rail was not really necessary. Also, I noticed that the output of at least an XL to come out and said "go ahead" (though the screen showed a left turn with an arrow), when it should have said exit and turn left. The XL was wrong, the VIA worked. Again, that was probably the result of the improvements made in software in the past two years. In addition, the XL "exit towards Erie, PA" (pronounced "pa" as in "Papa"), while through this just take the exit to Erie, and not to mention the state. It's kind of useless to say that the State's actions, so that just says a city and leave it at that is good.
And now, the best feature. The reason I would not consider any other brand in the NDP now is because TomTom is the only brand with an excellent EasyPort Mt. I only use my PND when I fly and then rent a vehicle. In my opinion, has built in support for the unit is great. It is much easier to carry and bring it would be if the assembly was a piece of hardware. I had no problem with EasyPort Montes in my two drums. They work great!
I did not want traffic or Bluetooth options, so I went with the "M" instead of "TM" and the 1405 instead of 1435.
Overall, this is a great NDP. I recommend it to anyone who takes more of a PND for use in vehicles. EasyPort mount is excellent and makes for a compact and easy to carry, and TomTom is the only company to offer.
